Full time job

I was home from work today so I actually got to see the show live.

First, the good:

Of course, it’s a bit sad that it has been more than a year and this was the first scene they were in together (other than a half second interaction). But this really was nice. It almost seemed like the scriptwriter might have been having fun with the fact that they hadn’t shared a scene, when Adrienne came up and said he looked like her brother. I loved how she knocked on his head and told him he needed to get over the idea that therapy is only for the weak. And the way she lit a fire under him to win Kayla back. I also loved the hug. I have always loved how she hugs him, just throwing herself in his arms.

Of course I have to point out Steve’s comment about them “acting like we’re 9” because actually they didn’t meet until they were adults. But aaaah, I’m in too good a mood about it, I’ll let it slide.

It was also nice to hear Steve talk to someone else (other than Joey and Kayla) so we could hear what he’s thinking. It was a bit vague but he referenced his freakout about the session and said he didn’t know exactly why he reacted that way. (I’m not sure if there is going to be anything specific there — I’m kind of thinking not.) Then, for the same reason, it was especially nice to hear Kayla’s point of view, with Marlena, because it was clear that she’s not vindictively lashing out Steve, she genuinely feels like their relationship is impossible (at the moment). Marlena’s reaction, that things will work out and “sooner than you think” would be ludicrous for a real therapist but is par for the course with soap therapist. But it makes me worry that Steve and Kayla’s reunion, after months of going nowhere, is going to be rushed and happen too quickly.

“Loving Steve Johnson is a full-time job” was a great line — and very true, as those of us who watch clips, blog, or tweet incessantly about him can attest. 🙂

The conversation in the park was really good, especially Kayla’s line about not wanting him to change who he is. That was a gesture toward what I wanted — for them each to realize something in order to find their way back together. I thought the conversation in the hospital, with Steve talking about having a breakthrough by filling out a form, was pretty weak, though Mary Beth saved it by staring at him during this speech with a “Really, Steve?” expression on her face.

In other storylines, I am ridiculously excited to see Clyde again, and actually squealed at Orpheus’s appearance, which I didn’t know was happening today.

I don’t know where this is going, but I’m happy to have these two on my screen again. Lucas and Adrienne moving into the mansion to look after Thomas makes about as much sense as anything else in this storyline – maybe we’ll get to see them more often, which would be nice. I was disappointed that Laura’s news about Abigail didn’t amount to anything more than “Abby was misdiagnosed and her medication probably made it worse” — especially since I remember Abby’s diagnosis actually was PTSD, wasn’t it? But “the pills made me do it” is classic Dena, so … shrug. I kind of enjoyed seeing Billy Flynn interacting with someone other than Jen and Ciara, so that was nice.

All in all, a decent episode with a few great moments. With the way things have been going, I call that a win.

  1. Wow Mary—your analysis makes me want to watch ! I, too, hope their reunion is not rushed—for all the months & months of crap we had to sit through, we deserve better. Don’t even get me started on their first love scene being about 20 seconds long after they had been apart for 16 years….but, I digress !! I am wary of the fact that the dress Kayla has on looks similar to the dress I see in the “second half” preview. I almost wonder / hope that if Kayla has surgery..will she remember things? will Steve have to court her ? I am looking forward to seeing the scene in the park, but I hope they don’t use it as a cure-all; there are trust issues that need to be addressed.

    • I am afraid this doctor he has picked, if he is actually going to be, will cause a lot of problems with this questionnaire Or Orpheus caused Steve problems before that could be the story, or with Kayla having health issues and all these issues could make a big story.

    • I agree that we deserve a real reunion, instead of just “Oh, everything is fine now.” I’m kind of worried that’s where things are going, but I’ve got my fingers crossed.

I like the idea of Orpheus being involved somehow in Steve having to leave Africa! That would tie Steve and Orpheus together very neatly.

  2. Someone on Twitter, I think, pointed out that there was no Hope and no teens in this episode, which is probably why I enjoyed it so much. I’m always for more mixing of characters and I agree that the highlight was Steve and Adrienne (finally) talking. Shades of the “real” Adrienne for me and not the nag that she was when she first came back or the object of a really terrible love triangle with Justin and Lucas that she was last year. She’s a strong woman who is absolutely committed to her family and I feel like that came through with both Steve and Chad and Jen yesterday.

I’m really hoping that they can right the disastrous Chad/Jen/Abby storyline. It’s hard to believe that it was this time last year that I was watching mainly for Chabby. They’ve gone significantly off the rails since Abby was committed.

So far, pretty good. As long as Hope doesn’t start taking drugs and committing crimes at night and Jennifer keeps her heart in her chest, I will remain hopeful.

    • I agree that Hope and company, and the teens, are pretty weak storylines right now. It was nice to get a break from them.

I agree that Chabby was one of the best things about the show last fall and it’s hard to believe Chad’s story is so bad now. It was nice to see him interacting with Sonny and JJ yesterday. I hope the new Abby is good.

“As long as Jennifer keeps her heart in her chest …” Yes, let’s hope. LOL!

  3. I must admit I had a fangirl moment when I saw Steve & Adrienne, in a scene, together. Then when I heard the dialogue I had another eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee moment!! Adrienne’s spot on assessment of Steve and his baggage just made me laugh out loud. But then my inner OCD came out at Steve’s comment about “what are we 9 years old again?” Yep Mary that drove me nuts too!

  4. I really need to stop reading posts on other sites—–they don’t know who Orpheus is !! 😮 Yes, rewriting history, because they think fans are either stupid or would never be sticking around that long !! I, for one, have never been a big Adrienne fan—but she knows S & K’s history, so I’ll give her credit there !

    • Orpheus is kind of a strange choice to bring back — he really wasn’t on very long. But I love the actor who plays him, so I’m glad to see him and interested to see what they do with him.

  5. Thanks for the usual great write-up… I had to “watch” it via nbc and comp. seemed to always have to “buffer” when S&K were talking.. I did hear the lameness spewing from Steve’s mouth at the hosp., tho, and was like, really? Yes, MBE’s expression did kind of save that b/s — I agree even as much as I’ve complained about them not being together, I don’t want S&K’s reunion rushed. Steve still needs to W-O-R-K to win her back and we need to see some luv’n.

Even tho Orpheus was b/f my time (slightly) I’m fan enuf to know who he is! It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out, but remain worried about what might happen to my faves. Don’t want S&K to get lost again.

It was great not seeing Hope, Rafe (even tho he’s nice to look at) or any of the kids. They’ve all been on waaaaayy too much IMO. always so much to ignore when they are all on.

    • Yeah, the hospital scene with Kayla was soooo weak. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing, like are we supposed to take that seriously?

I think Orpheus will be great to have around, and I hope they reference his first run somehow. It’s confusing because he sees John as Roman and he’s the one he had the grudge against, but now that John isn’t Roman … anyway, I don’t trust the writers to understand the complexities. LOL.

Yup — I’m ready to sign up too. 😀

  6. LOL…sign me up !!! Interesting take on the John/Roman actors—-at least Orpheus has connections with a few Salemites…including S & K !! I LOVED the Stockholm saga—could they go back there & visit Helga–lol ! If Orpheus has anything to do with Steve leaving his family in Africa–I am on board !!

  7. Agree LJ – I think that (Orpheus) could be one of the few plausible reasons S would ever leave — but still call B/S on the whole divorce thing.

I’d like to go back to the discussion from the previous post about the songs… didn’t they play The Rose a lot during the 2nd run… I’m no expert like you guys, but I thought I heard it when I watched those on youtube (wasn’t watching when originally aired). But, regardless, The Rose is my all-time favorite for S&K — I mean S signed and sang it to K during the deaf s/l — can’t get any better than that

I hate I have to be an after hours fan and get in late on all of the fun here and on twitter… but I’ll take it. I’ve moved around so much that I don’t really have friends (been at the most recent state almost 2 yrs tho – and no, not military so don’t even have that ), but I feel I’ve made them through our mutual S&K addiction 🙂
